Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a condition affecting the joint and muscles in the jaw region that control the opening and closing of the mouth. Symptoms include jaw pain, clicking or popping of the jaw, difficulty opening the mouth wide and headaches. The exact cause of TMD is unknown, however it is typically associated with excessive teeth grinding or clenching, stress or trauma to the jaw, anatomical abnormalities or arthritis in the jaw joint. Treatments for TMD can include physical therapy, medications, lifestyle changes, dental devices or surgery. Improving overall dental health and reducing stress can also be helpful in managing symptoms. TMD can significantly affect an individual’s quality of life and thus it is important to seek timely medical attention should these symptoms present themselves.
