Osteomalacia
Osteomalacia is a bone-thinning disorder caused by a lack of vitamin D or calcium, which results in softening of the bones and can lead to an increased risk of fractures. It can present with generalised bone and muscle aches, joint stiffness and muscle weakness, and is usually more common in adults over the age of 50. Osteomalacia can be prevented and treated with adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium and by limiting exposure to certain conditions, such as kidney disease and certain treatments, such as anticonvulsant drugs. Early diagnosis and treatment of osteomalacia can help reduce the risk of developing more severe fractures and complications.
