Orthopaedic Oncology
Orthopaedic oncology is a subspecialty of orthopaedic surgery that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer affecting the bones and joints. It is an essential component of patient care, particularly where tumors involving the bones and joints are concerned. Orthopaedic oncology encompasses both surgical and nonsurgical treatments, with the goal of helping patients improve their quality of life by minimizing pain, restoring function, and preserving or restoring limb length. Surgery may involve the removal of affected bone and/or the surrounding soft tissues, reconstruction of the affected area, and the use of external fixators or prostheses to stabilize the area. Nonsurgical treatments may include chemotherapy and/or radiation. Orthopaedic oncology is a critical component of cancer care, and it has the potential to improve outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients.
