Hammer Toe

Hammer toe is a deformity of the toes that causes the toe to bend and form a "claw-like" shape. It occurs when the muscles and tendons fail to work together and the toe joints become rigid. Symptoms may include thickening, pain, stiffness, redness, and difficulty moving the toe. If left untreated, hammer toe can cause blistering, callous formation, and permanent deformity. Treatment options may involve non-surgical procedures such as exercises and orthotic devices, or surgery. Hammer toe surgery can be performed to correct the deformity and may include tendon transfer and bone resection. Treatment is important to maintain good foot health and reduce discomfort.
