Autoimmunity
Autoimmunity is a condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells, tissue, and organs. It is caused by an immune system that fails to distinguish between foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses, and healthy cells. Autoimmunity can affect any part of the body and may cause a wide range of chronic and acute diseases and conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Treatment usually involves medications and lifestyle changes, such as stress reduction and a healthful diet, to reduce the intensity of symptoms.
