Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of chronic inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing painful stiffness and immobility of the spinal joints and other areas of the body. It is the most common and severe form of spondyloarthropathy, a group of inflammatory rheumatic diseases related to arthritis. Symptoms vary significantly and can include pain, fatigue, loss of mobility, and systemic inflammation. Diagnosis is based on physical exam, imaging tests and lab tests. Treatment typically includes medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, immunosuppressants, and biologic agents. Physiotherapy, lifestyle modifications, and supportive measures all help in managing symptoms. Early, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of ankylosing spondylitis can prevent or reduce disability and improve quality of life.
