Antioxidants and Diabetes
Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body from harmful by-products of normal metabolic processes called free radicals, which can damage cells and cause disease. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease in which the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or is unable to use insulin effectively, leading to high levels of sugar in the bloodstream. Research suggests that antioxidants may help protect against the complications of diabetes, such as kidney damage, heart disease, and stroke. Antioxidants may improve blood sugar control, reduce inflammation, and protect against damage to blood vessels. Increasing antioxidant intake by eating antioxidant-rich foods or taking supplements may be helpful for those with diabetes.
