Neurodegenerative
diseases Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of chronic conditions that affect the cells of the nervous system, resulting in progressive degeneration and loss of functional abilities. The diseases include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These diseases are typically caused by genetic or environmental factors and can have devastating emotional, physical and financial impacts on individuals and their families. Early detection and intervention are key to managing symptoms and prolonging quality of life. There are currently no cures for most of these diseases, but research and advances in treatments are helping to improve quality of life for those affected.
