Epidemiology

Epidemiology is a branch of public health science which focuses on the study of patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. Epidemiologists investigate and describe the determinants and distribution of disease, disability, and other health outcomes in populations. They use a range of methods and data sources to identify, explain, and evaluate the causes of health and disease, and to develop and evaluate prevention, control, and treatment interventions. The ultimate goal of epidemiological research is to improve population health by generating and applying new knowledge. Epidemiology plays an important role in providing evidence-based information to inform health policy decisions and clinical practice, and is increasingly relevant in a globalizing world with emerging and re-emerging infections and other health issues.
