Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) Amnestic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) is a type of food-borne illness caused by consuming shellfish containing high levels of domoic acid, produced as a result of the consumption of toxic algae blooms. This poisoning can cause neurological symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, respiratory distress, anterograde amnesia, and in some cases, even death. It is best to avoid consuming shellfish from areas where the levels of domoic acid have been reported to be high, and even if the quality of shellfish is good, it is advisable to cook it properly before consumption. ASP is a major public health concern and can be prevented by proper handling and sanitation of shellfish harvesting, processing and consumption.
