Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is the misuse or over-use of a substance, such as drugs, alcohol, or medications. It can come in the form of addiction, dependence, or misuse without dependence. Substance abuse can have serious physical and psychological consequences, including an increased risk of mental health problems, behavioral issues, physical ailments, problems in relationships, and even death. Substance abuse can be treated through therapy, rehabilitative programs, and medications that can help individuals manage their substance misuse. Although substance abuse is a serious public health issue, it is preventable with proper awareness and education.
