Alexithymia

Alexithymia is a personality disorder characterized by difficulty in recognizing and communicating emotions. It is associated with conditions such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse. Individuals with alexithymia also have difficulty in identifying and distinguishing physical and bodily sensations associated with emotional states. People with alexithymia may appear to be emotionally unresponsive, and may have difficulty expressing their needs and responding to the needs of others. Research indicates that alexithymia can be effectively treated with cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps people to identify, understand, and express their emotions.
