Trachoma

Trachoma is an infectious eye disease, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, which is the world's leading cause of infectious blindness. It is spread through contact with eyes, nose, or throat secretions from an infected person, and through shared use of items such as towels. In severe cases, blindness can result from long-term infection. Trachoma has been identified in many parts of the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, but is also seen in parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Treatment options such as antibiotics and health education programmes have been implemented in order to reduce the spread of trachoma and prevent blindness. Scientists have also been exploring the use of vaccines to reduce the severity of symptoms and the spread of the disease. Trachoma is an important global health issue and improving our understanding of it is essential in order to develop effective strategies for prevention and control.
