Swelling of the Brain
Swelling of the brain, known as cerebral edema, is the accumulation of excessive amounts of fluid in the tissue of the brain. It is a serious medical condition that can lead to increased intracranial pressure, decreased blood flow to the brain, and ultimately, coma or death. It is frequently caused by a brain injury or stroke, but can also result from infections, tumors, or other medical conditions. Treatment for cerebral edema usually consists of medications that reduce fluid and increased intracranial pressure, such as diuretics and corticosteroids. In more serious cases, surgery may be required to remove excess fluid from the brain. Early recognition and prompt treatment of cerebral edema is essential for optimal prognosis and recovery.
