Streptococcus Pneumoniae

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a bacteria that is responsible for causing illnesses such as pneumonia, ear infections and meningitis. It is a Gram-positive, spherical bacteria that can be found in the nose and throat of healthy people. It is one of the leading causes of infectious diseases in the world and is responsible for causing severe illness and death, particularly amongst children and the elderly. Vaccines are available to protect against Streptococcus pneumoniae, and antibiotics are used to treat the infections is it causes. Improved diagnosis, vaccination and treatment are key to reducing the impact of this pathogen on human health.
