Schistomiasis

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is a parasitic infection caused by the worm Schistosoma, that is found in warm, fresh water lakes and rivers. When the parasite enters the body, it causes a wide range of symptoms such as fever, fatigue, abdominal pain and blood in the urine or stool. It can also lead to long-term consequences such as liver damage, bladder cancer, and growth retardation. Schistosomiasis is one of the most prevalent Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), leading to a large burden of disease in tropical and subtropical countries. Preventive measures, such as improved water and sanitation, and availability of anti-parasitic medicines, can help reduce the spread of schistosomiasis.
