Rotavirus

Rotavirus is a subgroup of viruses that can cause severe gastroenteritis (diarrhea, vomiting and fever) most commonly in young children. The virus is spread through contact with fecal matter from an infected person. In some cases, severe diarrhea caused by rotavirus can lead to dehydration that requires medical treatment. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent rotavirus infection, and immunization programs have drastically reduced its associated morbidity and mortality.
