Legionellosis
Legionellosis is an illness caused by Legionella bacteria. It is most commonly known as Legionnaires' disease, a severe and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia. While Legionnaires' disease can be acute and life-threatening, a milder form of the infection, known as Pontiac fever, is more common. Legionellosis is contracted by breathing in small water droplets containing Legionella bacteria. People at a higher risk of infection include the elderly, smokers and people with a weakened immune system. Treatment usually involves antibiotics and in some cases, supplemental oxygen. Prevention efforts include water testing, cleaning and disinfection of hot water systems, and regular maintenance of any potable water sources.
