Giardiasis

Giardiasis is a common parasitic infection of the small intestine caused by microscopic organisms called Giardia lamblia. It is spread through contaminated water, food, and even contact with infected animals or people. Symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. If left untreated, giardiasis can lead to malnutrition, weight loss, and dehydration. Treatment typically involves a course of antibiotics and antidiarrheal medications. Taking steps to prevent exposure to contaminated water, food, and contact with potentially infected people or animals is key in reducing the risk of acquiring giardiasis.
