Giardia

Giardia is a protozoan parasite that can infect the intestines of humans and other animals, causing the disease known as giardiasis. It is the most common cause of waterborne diarrheal illness in the world, and it affects millions of people every year. Giardia is spread through consuming contaminated water or food, and it is frequently found in sewage and surface water. Symptoms include nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, but they can often be treated successfully with antibiotics or antiparasitic drugs. Giardia infection can be prevented by taking steps to ensure that water is safe to drink, such as boiling and filtering, and by avoiding contact with contaminated surfaces or stool. As a result, Giardia has become an important public health issue, and a better understanding of its prevention and treatment can help reduce its transmission.
