Coughing

Coughing is an important bodily reflex which helps to clear the airways of mucus, bacteria, and other foreign particles that can cause respiratory infections. By forcing air out of the lungs, it helps to keep airways free and clear. Coughing also serves an important purpose of alerting a person of potential irritants in the environment that may not otherwise be felt until they have been inhaled. Coughing can be beneficial in reducing symptoms of asthma, allergies, and other upper respiratory infections as these infections can be caused by the presence of particles in the lungs. Coughing can also be a sign of serious illness and should always be taken seriously.
