Campylobacteriosis
Campylobacteriosis, also known as campylobacter infection, is an infection caused by Campylobacter bacteria, one of the most common causes of foodborne illness worldwide. Symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain and cramping, malaise, headache, and vomiting. It is a serious public health concern, and can be particularly dangerous for the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, and in some cases probiotics may also help. Vaccines are currently being developed to help reduce the incidence of campylobacteriosis. Prevention is important, and involves proper handwashing and thorough cooking of food, especially poultry.
