Ascariasis
Ascariasis is an infection caused by roundworms (parasites) belonging to the Ascaris family. It is caused by consuming food or water that is contaminated with the roundworm eggs, and is more common in warm, humid climates and in areas with poor sanitation. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe abdominal pain and fever, weight loss, persistent cough, and nutritional deficiencies. Severe infections can cause intestinal blockage, or spread to other parts of the body. Treatment usually involves antiparasitic medications, along with supportive care such as fluids, antibiotics and nutrition. When left untreated, ascariasis can cause serious complications and even death. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for a full recovery.
