Urogynecology

Urogynecology is an emerging field of medical science that deals with medical and surgical management of pelvic floor disorders in women. These conditions include urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and other urological disorders such as overactive bladder, nocturia and stress urinary incontinence. Urogynecology healthcare services are often provided by a specialist known as a urogynecologist who is trained in both obstetrics and gynecology, as well as urology. Aging has been shown to be a significant risk factor in the development of these pelvic floor disorders. As women age, the pelvic floor muscles undergo significant changes and the concentration of hormones in the body progressively decreases. Additionally, factors such as childbirth, obesity, chronic constipation, and surgical procedures such as hysterectomy can also contribute to the development of pelvic floor disorders. Urogynecology research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms that lead to the development of pelvic floor disorders and identifying effective treatment options. Treatment options may include physiotherapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and in severe cases, surgery. Patient-centered care and shared decision making are integral components of urogynecology practice, and thus emphasis is placed on a comprehensive and individualized approach to management. In healthcare and scientific circles, urogynecology is an integral part of comprehensive women's health care. Consequently, accessibility to urogynecologic care is essential for the optimal management of pelvic floor disorders in women, including the elderly. Aging women with pelvic floor disorders are encouraged to seek professional help and care from certified urogynecologists to improve their quality of life.
