Gradient Solar Pond A salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) is a natural energy system that uses salinity differences in salt water to capture and store solar energy. It consists of three distinct layers of water with different salinities, separated by a semi-permeable membrane. Sunlight is focused on the outer layer, or ‘surface pond’, and warms the water. The warm water then rises, creating a thermal gradient between the surface layer and the intermediate layer, or ‘brine pond’. The temperature difference between the two layers causes water to move between the two layers, creating a pressure gradient. This pressure gradient is then used to drive turbines to turn and generate electricity. SGSPs offer an alternative energy source, and are especially useful in developing countries with abundant sunshine. SGSPs are easy to install and maintain, and have been successfully used as a reliable source of electricity in several regions around the world. Additionally, SGSPs can be used to desalinate salt water, providing a reliable source of freshwater.
