Pericycle

The pericycle is a specialised tissue layer found in the roots of vascular plants. It is located between the endodermis and the cortex, and contains cells that are responsible for root growth and development. This layer is important for providing the plant with nutrients and water from the soil, as well as anchoring the plant in the ground. It also helps to protect the plant from disease, pests and damage caused by environmental stressors. The pericycle helps the plant meet its energy requirements, by aiding the transport of water, minerals and other essential substances needed for photosynthesis. Additionally, it plays an important role in the formation of lateral roots, which ensure a balanced nutrient uptake.
