Nicotiana

Nicotiana is a genus of herbaceous plants that are members of the nightshade (Solanaceae) family. The genus is named after Jean Nicot, who introduced the plant to Europe from Brazil in the 16th century. The most well-known species of this genus is tobacco, but it also includes cultivated plants such as petunias, tomatoes, and potatoes. Nicotiana species are grown for their attractive flowers and sometimes used as ornamental plants in gardens. They also have some medicinal uses, with some species being used to produce a nicotine-based insecticide. Nicotiana plants are important for agricultural research and are used to study plant genetics, evolution, and morphology.
