Medicago Truncatula

Medicago truncatula, commonly referred to as barrel medic, is an important model species and important fodder crop used in research and agriculture. It is a small, annual legume native to the Mediterranean region that is widely adapted to semi-arid climates and has a short life-cycle. Medicago truncatula is often used in scientific studies on legume biology, as well as studies in gene expression, biochemistry and physiology. The species is also used for its farming benefits, such as its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and increase soil fertility. Additionally, its high protein and energy content make it an ideal fodder crop for livestock. Medicago truncatula has made significant contributions to the improvement of livestock production and the knowledge of legume biology.
