Lateral Roots

Lateral roots are specialized root structures in plants that are produced at a right angle to the main root axis. These secondary roots originate in the lateral cortex of the primary root and play a pivotal role in the anchorage and absorption of water and minerals. Lateral roots are considered essential for plants to access essential nutrients, particularly in times of drought when soil conditions become more difficult. The presence of lateral roots influences the growth, development, and yield of crops, making them invaluable in agriculture. Moreover, lateral roots are extensively studied in various research fields to understand their impact on plant growth and development.
