Fertilization Mechanisms

Fertilization is the process that unites the sperm and egg of a sexually reproducing organism to form a single diploid cell. This cell, known as the zygote, contains genetic material from both parents and will go on to develop into the embryo. In order to successfully fertilize the egg, two distinct and complex mechanisms must occur. The first of these is the recognition of the egg by the sperm, and the other is the fusion of the two cellular membranes. The recognition and fusion of egg and sperm is an incredibly important process, as it ensures the genetic continuity of species and is the foundation of sexual reproduction. Fertilization mechanisms are extensively studied in research related to reproductive health, as well as in the development of new methods of assisted reproduction.
