Fabaceae

The Fabaceae family, also known as the Leguminosae and commonly referred to as "legumes", is a family of flowering plants containing some of the most important crop species important to human health and nutrition. Common examples include species of beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, alfalfa, clover, and carob. Fabaceae species are popular due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, a process known as nitrogen fixation, making them essential to sustainable agricultural practices. In addition to their cultivation benefits, these plants are also a great source of dietary fiber and plant-based proteins, as well as a range of vitamins and minerals. Thus, the Fabaceae family is an important component to global food security and nutrition.
