Agrobacteria
Agrobacteria are bacteria that mainly inhabit the soil. They are of great significance to humans due to their ability to transfer genetic material (DNA) from one organism to another. This process, known as ‘gene transfer’, is used in biotechnology to modify plants and animals for specific purposes, such as increased disease resistance or increased yield. Agrobacteria are also used in the production of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. The bacteria can also be used to clean up pollutants from the environment, such as oil spills.
