Scanning Tunneling Microscope
. A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is an instrument used to image surfaces with atomic resolution. It works by scanning the surface with an atomically sharp metal tip that is moved in small increments and measures the tunneling current as it passes between the tip and the surface of the sample. This tunneling current is proportional to the local electronic density at the tip and sample, enabling sharp images with atomic resolution to be achieved. STMs are used to study many different materials, from crystals to bacteria, and can provide unprecedented insight into the nature of their physical and chemical properties. In addition, this technology is now being used to manipulate atoms and molecules on surfaces, making it a powerful tool for nanotechnology research.
