Myelodysplastic Syndrome
Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a condition that affects the stem cells in the bone marrow, resulting in an "ineffective" production of healthy red and white blood cells and platelets. The consequences of this include an increased risk of infection and anemia. It is typically found in older adults, and there is no known cure for this condition. Treatment and management options include transfusions, chemotherapy, and bone marrow transplants. MDS is an important condition to recognize and manage, for it has the potential to develop into a form of leukemia, if not properly treated.
