Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially life-saving treatment for a range of blood conditions and cancers. In HSCT, healthy hematopoietic stem cells, taken from either the patient's own body or a donor's body, are used to help create a new, healthy blood system. This can help to treat a range of diseases, including blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as inherited blood disorders such as thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia and thrombocytopenia. HSCT is also used to treat certain autoimmune diseases and immune system conditions. The process involves harvesting stem cells from the patient or donor, using chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy to destroy the existing blood cells, and then re-infusing the new stem cells into the patient. This creates a new, healthy and robust blood system, which can help to improve the patient's health outcome.
