Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia
(CMML) Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a rare type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is an aggressive disorder that primarily affects adults, usually those over the age of 60. In CMML, the bone marrow produces too many immature white blood cells, called myelomonocytes. These cells overcrowd the bone marrow and interfere with the production of healthy red and white cells, leading to anemia, infections, and bleeding issues. Treatment for CMML can include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplants, and drug therapies. In some cases, a stem cell transplant may be the only way to stop the progression of CMML. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, some patients can go into remission for a period of time.
