Conization

Conization is a gynecological procedure used to treat or diagnose certain abnormalities or diseases of the cervix. It involves the removal of the cone-shaped portion of the cervix, which is the part of the uterus that extends into the vagina. The procedure is often performed using a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) technique, which involves the use of electricity to cut off the surface of the cervix and remove the cone portion. Conization is used to diagnose or treat a range of conditions, such as precancerous changes, cervical cancer, and cervical polyps. In some cases, conization may also be used to remove cervical scar tissue that has caused infertility. The procedure can provide an accurate diagnosis, as it allows doctors to examine the tissue removed under a microscope. Following conization, regular follow-up visits to the doctor are necessary to ensure that no new signs or symptoms of disease are present. Overall, conization is a safe and effective way to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the cervix. It can help to identify and detect precancerous changes and cervical cancer, and can also be used to remove cervical scar tissue that has caused infertility.
