Polymyositis
Polymyositis is a chronic inflammatory muscle disease that is characterized by progressive muscle weakness and is usually diagnosed by a combination of blood tests and muscle biopsy. It can affect muscles throughout the body, however, most commonly affects the shoulders, trunk, and hips. The cause of polymyositis is unknown, however, it appears to be an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy muscle tissue. Treatment for polymyositis includes physical therapy, corticosteroids, and other immunosuppressive medications, which can significantly improve muscle strength, reduce inflammation, and improve overall quality of life. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended.
