Crepitus
Crepitus is the crackling, popping, or grinding sound heard when joints move. It is a type of joint noise, and is most commonly associated with arthritis. Crepitus usually occurs when the joint capsules, cartilage, and/or ligaments become thickened, brittle, and/or inflamed, resulting in friction when the joint is moved. This sound may indicate that a joint is not functioning properly and may need to be further examined and treated by a doctor. Treatments for crepitus may include physical therapy, injection therapy, and/or surgery.
