Arthrodesis

Arthrodesis is a surgical procedure that involves permanently joining two bones together (fusing) in a joint. It is used to treat joint damage caused by arthritis, bone fractures and bone deformities. In arthrodesis, a metal plate, screws, pins, rods or staples may be used to hold the bones together while they heal. Arthrodesis is beneficial to people who suffer from severe joint pain, instability, and deformity, as it can help reduce pain and improve function. It is also used to correct abnormalities in the joint structure. Arthrodesis helps to restore normal joint mobility and stability, and can improve a person’s lifestyle if they are otherwise unable to perform daily activities.
