Phycology
Phycology is the scientific study of algae. Algae are single-celled organisms found in almost all aquatic ecosystems, meaning they are essential to the health and stability of the environment. They produce oxygen and are a food source for many species of fish and other aquatic life. Phycology studies how algae form and survive in different environments, which helps researchers understand ecology, as well as how climate change may impact algae populations. Phycology is also important to biotechnology, as some algae produce valuable compounds that can be used in medicine and chemical processes.
