Nitrogen Metabolism
Nitrogen metabolism is the process by which organisms use nitrogen present in their environment to produce proteins, nucleic acids and other nitrogen-containing compounds. This process is essential for all life forms as nitrogen is a key component in the structure of proteins, nucleic acids and other essential biomolecules. Nitrogen metabolism also plays an important role in the cycle of nitrogen and other essential elements in the environment, allowing for the recycling of these compounds. By understanding the pathways and mechanisms of nitrogen metabolism, it is possible to understand and manipulate the nitrogen cycle, leading to more sustainable agricultural and industrial practices.
