Lichenology
Lichenology is the scientific study of lichens, which are organisms formed of a unique symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. This relationship is mutually beneficial and provides advantages to both the fungus and algae components. Lichens grow on the surfaces of rocks, trees and other substrates, often without the need for soil. They are critical elements of natural ecosystems, playing an important role in providing nutrients and energy for other organisms. As well as providing an important food source for other organisms, lichens also provide important environmental services such as air purification, nitrogen fixation and soil stabilization. Lichens are also tolerant of many environmental stresses, such as extreme temperatures, and can act as key indicators of environmental changes. This makes lichenology a very important field of study and its applications can be used to monitor and protect the environment.
