Glumes

Glumes are an important part of the grain of grasses, including wheat, barley, and oats. They are located at the base of the spikelet structure and are composed of two specialized bracts. Glumes are important in preventing grain loss by protecting the spikelet from pests, diseases, and weather. They also give the grain a unique shape and texture. Through genetic engineering, scientists have been able to develop varieties of wheat, barley, and oats with glumes of certain color, texture, and shape that make them more desirable to farmers and consumers. Glumes also play a role in grain storage, as they help keep stored grain dry and prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria.
