Cotyledons Botany

Cotyledons are the first leaves to appear in a seedling. They are located within the seed coat and are loaded with nutrients, which provide nourishment for the developing seedling during germination. Cotyledons are a vital part of botany, as they are responsible for providing the initial nutrients needed for seedlings to emerge and begin the growth process. They are also key in differentiating between monocots and dicots, as monocot plants typically have one cotyledon and dicot plants have two. As such, cotyledons provide an invaluable resource in botanical research, as they are usually the first to identify a seed’s species.
