Forensic Entomology

Forensic entomology is the study of insects and their development on animal and human remains to determine the time of death, other details of a crime scene, and the source of a disease. It is an important tool used by investigators and medical examiners in criminal investigations and provides vital evidence when combined with other investigative techniques. Forensic entomology helps to determine the post-mortem interval of a deceased and provides information on the location of a crime scene, the cause and manner of death, and the presence of toxins in the body. It also assists in disaster victim identification and is used to investigate environmental conditions and the transmission of infectious diseases.
