Chain of Custody

The chain of custody is a procedure used to track the movement of evidence or specimens from the time of collection to the time of analysis. It is an important tool to ensure the authenticity, accuracy and integrity of test results. The chain of custody documents the movements of evidence or specimens from person to person, from collection to analysis, and from one location to another. It also provides security for both the evidence and the personnel receiving, handling and transporting the evidence to ensure that the evidence is maintained in its original condition. The chain of custody also allows for proper documentation of the examiners who have handled the evidence, which can be used in court for legal purposes. The chain of custody helps to protect the rights of those involved in the criminal justice process, as well as the rights of any accused or victim.
