Intermediate Filaments
Intermediate filaments are a type of protein found in eukaryotic cells. They are found in the cells of animals, plants, and fungi and help maintain the structural integrity and shape of the cells they inhabit. Intermediate filaments play a role in cell proliferation, cell movement, and protection from various stresses. They also work to link organelles within the cell and to provide mechanical support in the extracellular matrix. Intermediate filaments are commonly studied for their potential to improve the understanding of cancer progression and other diseases, as their expression levels and distribution change drastically under such conditions.
