Smartphone Addiction
Smartphone addiction is a behavioural disorder characterized by preoccupation with and an excessive use of smartphones. People experience symptoms such as anxiety when separated from their smartphones, difficulty controlling their usage, increased social isolation and decreased interest in activities outside of their device. Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, providing easy access to information, entertainment, and social connections. Unfortunately, an excessive reliance on the device can lead to a decline in mental and physical health, with impacts on sleep, mood, productivity, and relationships. The potential harms of smartphone addiction should be taken seriously, as research has found a link between over-use and depression, anxiety, and concentration difficulties. Prevention and early intervention is important, and strategies can include reducing screen time, setting limits on the type of content accessed and educating about the potential harms of overuse.
