Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine
Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) is an interdisciplinary medical specialty that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people affected by functional limitations, disability, and chronic health conditions. PRM involves a broad range of interventions and services to promote physical, psychological and social functioning, with the ultimate goal of maximizing independence and quality of life. PRM integrates physical, psychological, social, and environmental approaches with current evidence-based medicine to evaluate and plan patient care, including the use of assistive devices, orthotics and prosthetics, exercise and physical therapy, manual therapy, therapeutic recreation and leisure, and other therapeutic interventions. PRM is particularly applicable for older adults, those with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, and other disabling medical conditions, and is an innovative approach to health care that is increasingly being used to treat a variety of conditions and to help improve quality of life.
